- The Love Hypothesis - Book Review
I finished this book in two days, obviously if sleep didn't exist and I didn't need to refuel myself with nutrients or as some call it 'food' I would've finished it in one day. I honestly shouldn't have slept because getting myself to sleep was tedious, why? Because the only thing on my mind was Adam Carlsen and Olive Smith. This rom-com had me cracking up - I mean- the jokes they had were so modern, despite the scientific atmosphere, the book was hilarious and so lovely to read. I now understand the hype and let me tell you the hype is worth it. I'm so in love with Adam's personality, he's so unbothered by what other people think of him, simply because he's so confident yet not arrogant. Olive is a bit of the opposite, cares about what people think of her projects, and in a way resembles some of Adam's asocial persona, both keeping their circle small. I appreciate that the build-up was properly positioned, not too extra, and not too far out in the story. Let's not even talk about the steamy parts that were juicy and very welcomed. Although I wanted to scream at Olive multiple times because she lacked regular communication and sharing what was on her mind rather than assuming, I still love her character. Life after Adam and Olive will be hard but I'm sure I'll live, though, I'm going to continue recommending this book to any rom-com reader with a great sense of humor! - Five Feet Apart - Book Review
Stella and Will both suffer from cystic fibrosis and encounter so many blocks while they are trying to give love a shot. Both unable to touch or be any closer than 5 feet take you through a rollercoaster of emotions, mostly heartbreaking. I loved this book, I really did, but it didn't WOW me as I expected it. At times, I felt myself getting teary-eyed because the pain was so heavy but I knew what I was getting into and I wanted to feel emotional damage. There's a strong resemblance to The Fault in Our Stars and I don't remember it being as sad as Five Feet Apart. This story involves a disease called Cystic Fibrosis and I am glad this book raised awareness of CF patients and their everyday routine, the feeling of loneliness they experience, and how much they are forced to see life through a different lens. Some scenarios felt way too unrealistic and cheesy that I cringed here and there but overall I believe the movie had a stronger impact than the book (can't believe I'm saying this). I highly recommend this book to everyone who wants to put themselves in emotional pain with this young adult romance story. PS. Claire Wineland who suffered from CF had a major impact on this story and died very young, nevertheless, her story has left a mark on this earth and shall continue to spread and raise awareness of Cystic Fibrosis. - Atomic Habits - Book Review
James Clear is a genius for writing this awesome book. Intresting enough, he also narrated the audiobook version which I thought was cool. This audiobook has the right tips on how to break habits and start healthier ones. I mean it goes into detail and breaks it down to a point where it makes the reader go "ohhh" "I see" "I've done that" "It makes sense now" as this covers the right approach when aiming a goal. This book has taught me that learning a new habit is about consistency, regardless if I may not see results, and delayed gratification. Small changes indeed have a great impact in the long run but James Clear helps you see where we may be lacking and how we can improve. Atomic Habits can be beneficial for anyone in need of switching to better habits. So far, this book has inspired me to apply it in my everyday life and I can honestly say it is written in a fluent way that isn't challenging to understand, despite having tons of old/recent research to back up. - Nigh Road - Book Review
Beautifully written. This book carved such a great beginning with each character's background story. Night Road was a heartbreaking story where an admirable upper-class family is hit with the tragedy of a loss. Lexi who enters their lives has brought Mia Farraday courage and happiness, but soon, closer to graduating High school, it turns into despair. An accident that leaves the Farraday family shattered and broken. Lexi carries a dark background given that her mother died from a drug overdose, and doesn't have the same socioeconomic status as the Farraday's, Lexi has all the odds against her. Despite how Lexi was raised, it doesn't have an impact on her beliefs as she values honesty and owns up for her mistakes. I enjoyed listening to the audiobook of Night Road. It covers so much about how life can change in an instant and create ripple consequences from it. Rating: 4.05 Author: Kristin Hannah Format: Audiobook Year published: 2011 Genre: Fiction
- The Rose Code - Review
WOW! This book has left me speechless. Though the story is based on the code breakers from Bletchley Park, the main focus is centered on Mab, Beth, and Osla. These three characters have nothing in common, except that they share secrecy and swore under the Official Secret Act. This lengthy historical fiction was not a quick read for me given that I had to constantly search up a few British lingos that were unfamiliar to me, but it is the right length because it has so much detail that it left me wanting more. Kate Quinn has shown what a great author she is by placing the right amount of cliff-hanger within each chapter, so much of it I thought I was getting closer to what was going to happen and then the unexpected occurs. I have been putting this book aside ever since I saw that it has 656 pages and I went in with the idea that it was related to WW2, but it was more than that. The Rose Code was well-researched and even included real characters, contains romance, rivalry, and tons of unexpected events. I absolutely loved this book so much! Thank you William Morrow and Goodreads for this amazing giveaway!!!!! I found this website with ALL the characters from the book: Book Companion ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- SPOILERS BELOW !!! (Stay away if you haven't read the book) Some WOW moments that I am still fumbling to make sense in my head: * When Beth stood up to her mom and SLAPPED her, I lost it!! That was a badass move * When Beth swallowed Mr. Knox's lockbox key. I assumed she pooped it out lol * The way Francis Gray and Lucy die broke me. I was not expecting the chapter to end like that. * So when they described how Osla and Phillip had a sexual encounter, I thought it was wonderful, but later when I finished the book, I googled the characters and man, I hate that the images that came up of the Duke of Edinburgh are of old age instead of when he was young. I wanted to erase that from my memory immediately * Listen, when Mab's Australian husband Mike Sharpe come through that door when they are in need of a technical to fix the bombe machine, I was chanting "this keeps getting better!!" * It is interesting to know that back then you needed a marriage certificate in order to rent a hotel with your partner, and how women couldn't be sold condoms without being looked at weird. Women were seen as fragile and their voice wasn't as valued men's. I teared up when Beth was taken to Clockwell and the way the dog just stayed behind with his leash attached, I lost it. - Today Tonight Tomorrow - Book Review
This was a really adorable story that starts off as rivalries but ends up being rather sweeter. Both Rowan and Neil have been competing and in a way pushing each other to their max potential without realizing it. They hate each other so much and one wants to always be better than the other, but a turn is taken when they are to complete a scavenger hunt before graduating. I enjoyed this lovely story, it made me realize how much I miss high school and how old I am lol I wasn't really wowed which explains my 3 star rating. Pros: * The fact that this entire book is based on one day and how many adventures were experienced in a short amount of time was quite mesmerizing because it tells how great the author is by hooking the reader with this high school story. * I loved how realistic some incidents were, for example where Neil and Rowan put the condom backward, hinting that Neil is inexperienced in that particular area. * Learned about other cultures and religions, was informative Cons: * I would've liked to see more of their newfound love and where it took them as this story only takes place in one day. * I find it hard to believe that people easily throw the "I love you" phrase quickly and I feel it happened way too quickly to even fall in love * A bit cheesy for my taste but then again it's about high school love so 50/50 lol Rating: 3.80 Author: Rachel Lynn Solomon Format: Audiobook Published year: 2020 Genre: Young Adult
- Local Woman Missing - Book Review
Are you kidding me? This story had me pensive AF. To be honest, in the beginning I was very lost so I just let the audiobook go on and sometimes I would zone out but it picked up. I've noticed that thriller books are often better narrated rather than reading it because throughout the book there were instances were the author really tried to tiptoe and make the scene as extensive as possible by giving as much detail to opening the door, or going out in the rain, etc. and I can't imagine having to read that in a more than one page. I should also mention that having a great narrator is always key for a full ride on a chilly thriller story. Listen, I would've never thought that the story would've developed as it did and I'm glad I was taken into a re-route like hold up- what just happened. The chapters are straight-forward and written from 11 years ago to now, both aiming to solve the case of the missing 'woman'. Leo only had a small portion of fame but boy was he a prick and ruthless when he was older. I was intrigued because I thought I had it solved when new incidents continued happening to Meridith, but I was proven wrong. I absolutely enjoyed this story. So happy I listened to this audiobook. - Malibu Rising - Book Review
I needed a reading to make me feel hooked from beginning to end and this was it. Ever since "The Seven Husbands of Hugo" life hasn't been the same for me so I was in search of a story to draw me into each character and Malibu Rising had a combination of family betrayal, single mother, a tie-knot sibling bonding that look out after each other, and love. The Riva siblings felt so natural and realistic because the problems they faced are more common than most would agree (except being well off in money lol). Malibu Rising is written in in two POV's, one chronologically coming close to a party and the other one is from back then which helps the reader understand the characters more of their past. At some point, both stories arrive to one but building up to it will leave you wanting more from each page. Though my rating wasn't 5 stars, I set my expectations to the roof once I fall in love with a book from the same author like "The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo", the flow of the story was easy-going but doesn't compare to TSHOEH, but nevertheless, it was so engaging to listen to this audiobook. - The Accidental Pinup - Book Review
To start off, the book cover is so colorful and cute, totally an eye catcher! The accidental pinup brings you a body-inclusive outlook and an accidental romance that begins when Cassie's competition is considered to be the photographer for her best friend Dana's project. Reid who has been chosen over Cassie in past minor projects is found to slowly feel things for Cassie the more time they spend together. I was pretty engaged in the beginning of the story, developing the characters, and so forth. At times, I felt like I would've loved it if the story would've been told from Cassie and Reid's POV separately alternating each chapter between them, even though the reader is able to decode what each of them feels, I wanted to know more of their thoughts given that Cassie has a boss-ass personality. It was beautiful to see how Cassie set her foot down and knew to be assertive given that in the photography industry being a Black woman comes with extra challenges. This interracial romance will have you swooning over Cassie and Reid. This was an ARC from Goodreads giveaway. - Sapien Ethics: Who We Are, Why We Are Here, and How We Can Live Better - Book Review
Despite its length which was very short, it took me longer than normal to read this book because I wanted to make sure I soak up all the information and interpret it as best as I can by using life examples. This great book used simple language to explain rather challenging philosophical concepts and made me feel comfortable reading it. I highly recommend this short read to those who may want some clarity on the purpose of life! You will learn about stoicism, consciousness, subconscious, philosophy, ethics, and more. Thank you Goodreads for this free giveaway! Rating: 4.05 Author: Mark F. Godwin Format: E-book Published year: 2021 Genre: Philosophy
- My Perfect Daughter - Book Review
I was so invested and engaged in this story from beginning to end. This was my first book by Sarah A. Denzil and she blew me away with the details she put in this story. The story is told from Zoe's POV from "then" and "now" which helps the reader navigate more into the details and the chapters were straightforward and short. Also, at the end of every chapter, you get a feeling that you may be closer to what is going to happen next as though there is something else coming and the anticipation was killing me every time I was near ending a chapter. I never wanted to put this book down, oh my. Maddie was essentially raised by serial killers, and her life takes a turn when Zoe adopts her. Peter who was the serial killer, has a daughter named Maddie whom he uses to lure women in his farm to eventually kill them. Zoe was the exception, she was able to escape with the help of Maddie, so Zoe grows fond of Maddie to the point of raising her and becoming her adoptive mother. But you wonder, if Maddie was raised by serial killers, will she become one or can Zoe help eliminate those traits? I won this book from a Goodreads giveaway and I was not disappointed at all. 100000% recommend if you are into psychological thrillers. Rating: 5 Author: Sarah A. - There's a Hole in my Bucket - Book Review
I loved the idea of this bucket list!!! I honestly thought about considering it for my sister, and this book really made me feel tons of emotions. Royd takes you to a roller coaster of emotions with the story of his brother Mike who is slowly deteriorating due to ALS, as this isn't bad enough, the process of seeing his brother lose muscle strength but Mike's perseverance to have everyone around him and still making sure people aren't sad when he passes. Beautiful memoir, though there are too many details that could've been removed to keep the reader engaged, nevertheless, this book was awesome.
