The Rose Code - Review

Writer's picture: Vanessa AlcaldeVanessa Alcalde

WOW! This book has left me speechless.

Though the story is based on the code breakers from Bletchley Park, the main focus is centered on Mab, Beth, and Osla. These three characters have nothing in common, except that they share secrecy and swore under the Official Secret Act.

This lengthy historical fiction was not a quick read for me given that I had to constantly search up a few British lingos that were unfamiliar to me, but it is the right length because it has so much detail that it left me wanting more.

Kate Quinn has shown what a great author she is by placing the right amount of cliff-hanger within each chapter, so much of it I thought I was getting closer to what was going to happen and then the unexpected occurs.

I have been putting this book aside ever since I saw that it has 656 pages and I went in with the idea that it was related to WW2, but it was more than that.

The Rose Code was well-researched and even included real characters, contains romance, rivalry, and tons of unexpected events.

I absolutely loved this book so much!

Thank you William Morrow and Goodreads for this amazing giveaway!!!!!

I found this website with ALL the characters from the book:

SPOILERS BELOW !!! (Stay away if you haven't read the book)

Some WOW moments that I am still fumbling to make sense in my head:

* When Beth stood up to her mom and SLAPPED her, I lost it!! That was a badass move

* When Beth swallowed Mr. Knox's lockbox key. I assumed she pooped it out lol

* The way Francis Gray and Lucy die broke me. I was not expecting the chapter to end like that.

* So when they described how Osla and Phillip had a sexual encounter, I thought it was wonderful, but later when I finished the book, I googled the characters and man, I hate that the images that came up of the Duke of Edinburgh are of old age instead of when he was young. I wanted to erase that from my memory immediately

* Listen, when Mab's Australian husband Mike Sharpe come through that door when they are in need of a technical to fix the bombe machine, I was chanting "this keeps getting better!!"

* It is interesting to know that back then you needed a marriage certificate in order to rent a hotel with your partner, and how women couldn't be sold condoms without being looked at weird. Women were seen as fragile and their voice wasn't as valued men's.

I teared up when Beth was taken to Clockwell and the way the dog just stayed behind with his leash attached, I lost it.
